Ron Barassi’s St Kilda time capsule home has been listed for sale.

The St Kilda home AFL Legend Ron Barassi and wife Cheryl lived in for decades has hit the market as a time capsule where the larger than life footballer’s spirit can still be felt.

Barassi is one of the greatest players and coaches the code has ever seen, with his 254-game on-field career including six VFL premiership appearances, four seasons as the captain of the Melbourne Demons and two Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott medals, as well as three selections for the All Australian team and being named Victorian team captain.

After hanging up the boots he coached four more premiership sides in a 515-game career behind the play, and has been included in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2001, and has Legend Status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

His time in the coaches box included roles with Carlton, Melbourne, North Melbourne and the Sydney Swans.

Off the field Barassi was also the publican of the Mountain View Hotel and worked with grassroots football development.

Having lived in St Kilda since the 1970s, his former home still has many throwbacks to that bygone era.

Listing agent Frank Mlikota has it listed for $2m-$2.2m, and believes it will be going to a custodian who wants to keep some of the Barassi’s old spirit alive within the home.

The home’s study is very much as Ron had it set up, with old folders and his book collection still on display.

The front living room is an eclectic mix of exposed brickwork, water views and light-and-bright decor.

“His office has a 70s veneer, and it’s still got his old folios and it’s like he never left,” Mr Mlikota said.

Downstairs, a drawing room that was Cheryl’s space in the home still has an artist’s easel set up inside it.

While it’s part of the suburb’s venerable Marli Place terraces that date back to the 1850s, the agent is describing the home as more in Barassi-style: something he said is like Baccardi and nicotine glam.

“It’s just like Ron and Cheryl are still there,” he said.

“It’s like a time capsule, so it’s probably going to someone who will appreciate the Ron Barassi story.

“There’s great character to it.”

In the Barassi’s time at the home it attracted footballers, business luminaries, politicians and all manner of Victorians, many stopping for a game of pool on the table in one of the home’s living areas.

The family home is not all still living in the 70s, with updated bathrooms and an overhauled kitchen adding flashes of modernity to the residence.

The floorplan includes living and dining zones on the ground floor, as well as the kitchen and the bathroom.

Upstairs, a further living room is joined by another bathroom, Barassi’s old study and a further bedroom that opens out to a deck with a spiral staircase leading down to the rear courtyard and a car park.

While the 70s lives on in many rooms of the time capsule home, the bathrooms have been modernised for comfort.

With an elevated perch on The Esplanade, it has a view out to Port Phillip Bay and is just a short stroll from the eclectic lifestyle on offer in St Kilda — with Fitzroy St and the Albert Park Lake in one direction and Acland St and Luna Park the other.

Barassi passed away in 2023, and his wife Cheryl late last year, with the family having decided now is the right time for it to start a new chapter.

Mr Mlikota is arranging private inspections only for the home.
