Butter Gum Lodge, a charming and impressive log cabin, is nestled in the heart of the Yarra Valley’s Christmas Hills.

Crafted from Californian pine logs, the three-level home showcases timeless craftsmanship and features an architectural modern extension.

The vendors, Sam and Sophie, purchased the Buttermans Track property in 2017, seeking a lifestyle property for their family.

“From the moment we drove up the driveway, we knew it was something special,” says Sam.

“The craftsmanship of the original Great Bear Log Homes residence, the privacy and the surrounding bushland were unlike anything else we’d seen.”

The couple and their two children have called the property home ever since.

“We always said we’d never leave,” Sam says.

“Life has a way of changing your plans, but we’ll always feel incredibly fortunate to have raised our family here.”

“One of the things guests often notice is the beautiful, sweet timber aroma from the Californian pine logs, which gives the home a warmth and character that’s difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.”

Over the past eight years, Sam and Sophie have undertaken a thoughtful renovation, preserving the home’s original elements while adding a modern extension.

“Rather than trying to imitate the original building, we embraced the contrast. The modern wing complements the warmth and texture of the log home beautifully and creates two very different but connected living experiences.”

A glass hallway connects the original cabin to the living area of the extension, which features soaring ceilings and almost floor-to-ceiling windows that capture natural light and beautifully frame the surrounding bushland.

“One of our favourite design features is the large celestial windows found in both the original home and the extension,” says Sam.

“On clear nights you can sit inside by the fire in complete comfort and look up at a sky full of stars or watch the moon pass overhead. It’s one of those simple experiences that never loses its magic.”

With a wine cellar, wood fire pizza oven, fire pit and 4.05ha of charming grounds, Butter Gum Lodge is a lifestyle property with much to offer.
